Mouse-ear Hawkweed

I found this solitary plant, another immigrant from Asia and Europe, growing on a red-clay bank that was so sterile that it didn't support any other life.
At least that was the conclusion I drew from observing its habitat.
But botanists tell us that the Hawkweed produces chemicals in its roots, like that of the Black Walnut, which are very effective in eliminating competition from other plants.
